The Kishwaukee Archers community has some experienced instructors who can help you learn the basics, improve your skills, and shoot with confidence. The independent instructors listed below are USA Archery and SafeSport certified, ensuring a safe and supportive learning environment. Feel free to reach out to them directly for lessons, coaching, and more information.

No equipment? No problem! If you would like to try archery, Kishwaukee Archers offers archery equipment at the club for nominal fee.

Jim Chelsvig

Jim Chelsvig started as an archery instructor in 2015 and helped run archery activities at various events. After retiring in 2018, he became an assistant instructor at an archery shop in Montgomery, IL, and the following year became the lead instructor for most classes. In late 2020, he began teaching beginner and intermediate archery classes for local park districts, offering classes for ages 9 and up, including seniors, teens, and families. In 2023, he introduced an advanced class for kids excelling at the intermediate level.

Jim teaches using basic recurve bows, though he is skilled with traditional longbows and compound bows. His preferred shooting style is modern barebow. He offers individual and group lessons and provides all necessary equipment for beginners.

Ron Hemmelgarn

Ron Hemmelgarn has been an active member of Kishwaukee Archers since 2004. Over the years, he has served in key leadership roles, including nine years as a director and four years as club president. He is a certified Level Two archery instructor.

Ron’s passion for archery began early when he received his first real bow, a 20-pound recurve, at just nine years old in 1950. That passion continues today, with a particular enthusiasm for 3D archery and bowhunting, as well as occasional target shooting for fun. Over the years, he has earned multiple IBO and MAC championships, all shot at unknown distances.

With decades of experience, Ron offers instruction in recurve, longbow, horse bow, compound, and crossbow. His teaching experience includes individuals and families, as well as scout groups, veterans, special needs participants, school groups, and park district programs. Ron accepts students of all ages and abilities. His youngest student was five years old, and the oldest was 89.

Ron has a flexible schedule and is available most days and times for lessons.

Josh Lepage, has been a member of Kishwaukee Archers since 2007 holding various leadership positions within the club. He is currently a director on the Kishwaukee Archey Club Board, and 3D Chairperson. He is a certified USA Archery Level 2 Instructor since 2021.

Josh has been involved in archery since he was 15 years old; some 50 years now. He primarily shoots compound bow for NFAA style league, USA Archery Pin Shoots and 900 Rounds all on paper targets. He especially enjoys shooting 3D style foam animal targets for competition, on an IBO format for the Midwest Archery Competition, MAC and ASA style with Delta Meckenzie 3D animal targets at national Pro-Am and state federation level competition.

Josh is available for one-on-one archery lessons using indoor or outdoor paper or 3D animal targets. He is currently involved with the Genoa Kingston Robin hoods after school program introducing 6th - 8th graders to the sport of archery. Josh’s primary focus is offering compound bow lessons but he will work with recurve or longbow style archers as well.

Jeremy Cox was introduced to archery when his children participated in a Cub Scout archery event and joined the Kishwaukee Archery youth league. Inspired by how enjoyable archery is as a family activity, his family became members of the club, and Jeremy began shooting as well.

He now leads archery nights for various groups, including Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Scouting America Troops. Jeremy also enjoys offering private and small group lessons for kids and families. He is a certified USA Archery Level 2 Instructor, an Instructor Trainer, and a Scouting America Archery merit badge counselor.
